Christmas decoration of the year

CHRISTMAS DECORATION OF THE YEAR

Christmas decoration of the yearI decided not to decorate for Christmas this year. I know, it sounds horrible doesn’t it! Someone with all the creativity in the world has decided not to decorate. No Christmas balls, no garland, no nothing to be honest.

Why, you may wonder?

Well I live with my youngest son who is a young man now and we just do not feel like it. We do not have company over for cocktails and parties. For Christmas dinner we cook up one of those frozen Butterball in a box turkeys. So why go through all the fuss and bother to put up decorations that no one will even see. Then to take them all down in a couple weeks.

Ha, now that I am sitting here typing this post I have the urge to go to the basement and dig out my fake pink Christmas tree!

But to try and keep a bit of the holiday spirit going I decided to do something with some Christmas strip lighting. I have had it in the back of my mind for quite some time now. But I had to wait till the Christmas season to put it together. You can’t really find Christmas decorations in the stores during Easter Season or even the during the summer. Well I could have ordered online but the shipping is way too costly!

So here was my idea. I wanted a big peace sign that lights up! I wanted something to leave up all year round and that I could plug in any time I wanted. So I did just that! I went to the hardware store. I bought some PVC plumbing pipe, some “T” connectors and some chrome colored duct tape.

PEACE SIGN

I found some really bright strip lighting and built myself a peace sign.

Take a look at this beauty! It is a hippie’s dream come true!

I added a few fake flowers for that authentic hippie look.

I also made a sign to hang along side of the peace sign. Now what goes hand in hand with the peace symbol? Why LOVE of course. But I did not want to make a big heart. I did the next best thing. I wrote the word out using copper coil tubing. I had an old branch in the backyard from when my son pruned back a big tree and hung the letters off that.

Here is how they look together on the garage door.

We won’t be using that door till next spring so I have no worries. But I plan to move the peace sign up to where you see the snowflake hanging. The snowflake has been up there for 3 years now  so it is ready to be replaced. The LOVE letters will go elsewhere also.

At night that baby is so bright it could replace the city street lamp out front. Plus it is a good thing my neighbor doesn’t have a window that faces this side of my house.

Peace Sign

So all in all this is a good compromise. I don’t have to bother with a ton of decorations but I still get to enjoy the lights of the Christmas season in a style that I really love!

Plus it is completely stress free. Not many can say that at Christmas time!

My tree is very small, have the time I don’t even have it lit up….Happy Holidays ..bahumba

    • Hi Peni. Thanks for the compliment on the Peace sign. I used to put up a 24 inch blue tinsel tree that dates back to the 60’s. Then last year I splurged and bought a 4 foot pink tinsel tree I got from the thrift store. It was one of those kind that no one wants. Seriously who puts up a pink Christmas tree. It was there for a couple weeks so I figured I would rescue the poor thing. It is quite pretty though. But my heart belongs to my peace sign now. If I croak down the road they better light that baby up at my memorial LOL!

  2. Whoop, whoop, this little hippie in South Africa is so happy that you shared the Peace sign Kat. My kinda Christmas decor coz that’s what this time of the year should be all about – Love and Peace and you have both, side by side. What more do you need? Hope you guys have an awesome, loving, laughter filled festive season.

P.S. Sorry if you croak, I’m coming to steal that sign after your memorial 😉

    • LOL I should tell my son to put a raffle on the blog “if” I croak. He laughs at it every time he pulls up to the driveway. Then when he gets up in the middle of the night it shines so bright in our kitchen window he thinks it is morning and he slept in.
I talked to my neighbor as I do not have it on a timer yet and she said “oh we’ve got blackout curtains so we can hardly see it in our bedroom!

Speak your mind. I love comments.
