I decided not to decorate for Christmas this year. I know, it sounds horrible doesn’t it! Someone with all the creativity in the world has decided not to decorate. No Christmas balls, no garland, no nothing to be honest.
Why, you may wonder?
Well I live with my youngest son who is a young man now and we just do not feel like it. We do not have company over for cocktails and parties. For Christmas dinner we cook up one of those frozen Butterball in a box turkeys. So why go through all the fuss and bother to put up decorations that no one will even see. Then to take them all down in a couple weeks.
Ha, now that I am sitting here typing this post I have the urge to go to the basement and dig out my fake pink Christmas tree!
But to try and keep a bit of the holiday spirit going I decided to do something with some Christmas strip lighting. I have had it in the back of my mind for quite some time now. But I had to wait till the Christmas season to put it together. You can’t really find Christmas decorations in the stores during Easter Season or even the during the summer. Well I could have ordered online but the shipping is way too costly!
So here was my idea. I wanted a big peace sign that lights up! I wanted something to leave up all year round and that I could plug in any time I wanted. So I did just that! I went to the hardware store. I bought some PVC plumbing pipe, some “T” connectors and some chrome colored duct tape.
I found some really bright strip lighting and built myself a peace sign.
Take a look at this beauty! It is a hippie’s dream come true!
I added a few fake flowers for that authentic hippie look.
I also made a sign to hang along side of the peace sign. Now what goes hand in hand with the peace symbol? Why LOVE of course. But I did not want to make a big heart. I did the next best thing. I wrote the word out using copper coil tubing. I had an old branch in the backyard from when my son pruned back a big tree and hung the letters off that.
Here is how they look together on the garage door.
We won’t be using that door till next spring so I have no worries. But I plan to move the peace sign up to where you see the snowflake hanging. The snowflake has been up there for 3 years now so it is ready to be replaced. The LOVE letters will go elsewhere also.
At night that baby is so bright it could replace the city street lamp out front. Plus it is a good thing my neighbor doesn’t have a window that faces this side of my house.
So all in all this is a good compromise. I don’t have to bother with a ton of decorations but I still get to enjoy the lights of the Christmas season in a style that I really love!
Plus it is completely stress free. Not many can say that at Christmas time!
